Independence Day In Brazil

As Americans celebrate Labor Day today in the US, here in Brazil September 7 is Independence Day. Brazilians are celebrating their independence from Portugal, and Sept. 7, 1822 is regarded as the official day. On this day in 1822 Dom Pedro I made the famous statement "Independence or Death", and below is a famous painting in Brazil depicting Dom Pedro 's act of declaring Brazil's independence from Portugal, whose king was Dom Pedro's father.

Probably the most peaceful declaration of independence in Latin America and the Caribbean -- which may have much to do with why Brazilian internal history has seen so little bloodshed (compared to many of its neighbors). Pedro's father, João always intended to return to Portugal (they ruled the Portugese empire from Brazil for awhile to escape Napoleon), but Pedro had developed a fondness for Brazil. [Brazilians like to tell how João always ate imported food, but Pedro liked rice and beans just average Brazilians!] He declared Brazil independent rather than heed his father's order to return to Portugal. Of course, it may have not hurt that he got to rule his own kingdom...

Keith, Brazilians are definitely lovers of peace, and they definitely do not like war. Good info. about Dom Pedro, thanks. He probably didn't mind at all getting to rule in his own kingdom, especially in such a beautiful place like Brazil.
